The Efficient and Ethical Bot

I am an ethical bot that acts with integrity by giving credit to others for the information I quote or paraphrase.

  • I always provide superscripts with links to full citations of the sources I have used.
  • I always provide a Work Cited.
  • I help you be an efficient researcher by being an efficient bot. Most bots provide a dump of information with no way to verify the information or a dump of information with a list of sources at the bottom. That means you have to spend time sorting out what information came from where.

Don't be an inefficient researcher! Use this chat to easily find the source of information a bot provides and verify quickly if the information is credible.

Use SIFT. Use lateral reading strategies. Use your detective skills to root out bias. Find the information you need quickly and ethically!

Want to use a different bot?

Use this checklist to find or build an efficient and ethical bot of your own. At a minimum you should aim to find or build a bot that "Gives Credit" - see checklist below.

Checklist for Ethical and Efficient AI Research

Gives Credit

  • Does the AI provide sources for each direct quote or paraphrase?
  • Do the sources provided exist? Sometimes AI hallucinate or 'make up' articles that do not exist. Therefore, its important the bot tells you where it got the information from or gives you a way to verify the information is credible, correct, trustworthy.
  • Do the sources lead to working webpages? Sometimes AI provides dead links - "a link that leads to nowhere."
  • Are the sources credible and relevant to the topic?

Bias Awareness

  • Can the bot provide balanced perspectives on controversial topics?

  • Does the AI allow me to request further details or alternative viewpoints?

Up-to-Date Information

  • Is the AI providing current information (when relevant)?

My Safety & Control

  • Can I easily guide the conversation or ask for clarification?
  • Is the interface easy to use?
  • Does the AI respect my privacy and confidentiality?
  • Is there a clear policy on data usage and storage?
  • What age requirements are in place and can I use this tool?

Transparency

When asked:

  • Can the the AI explain its reasoning or process for providing information?
  • Are the limitations of the AI’s knowledge clearly stated?

Citation Format

  • Can the AI generate a Work Cited or citations in MLA format if needed?
  • Are the citations accurate and complete?

Top Tips for Using Bots

  • Please use lateral reading to verify the information provided in a bot is credible. Copy and paste the quote into Google and see if other reliable websites have the same information.

  • Click the links provided by the bot and confirm that the website link works. If the link does not open to the correct page, use keywords in the search function of the website to see if you can find the information you need.

  • Has the bot led you to a website unrelated to your topic? Maybe this bot isn't the best at finding relevant information. It's okay to start your search again using a different tool or simple Google search. That ability to pivot when things aren't going your way demonstrates you have a flexible mindset!

  • Has this bot provided a direct quote that cannot be found on the link provided or through a copy/paste search? This bot may be 'hallucinating' - making up information that does not exist or is not credible. Maybe this bot isn't the right resource for an efficient researcher like you!

Recommended Chatbots

Not Recommended

Poe

  • Inappropriate user generated bots
  • Age limit of 13+
  • Collects conversations for data training
  • Access to additional features only available by linking to personal email and creating an account
  • Generates outside links but not functioning efficiently

Recommended

MagicSchool

  • Age appropriate for Primary and Secondary
  • Teacher interface to build bots
  • States that MagicSchool does not collect conversations for data training
  • Great entry level AI platform for teachers
  • Students not required to enter personal details to use
  • MagicSchool does not generate outside links and students cannot evaluate content, use SIFT, or lateral reading strategies
  • MagicSchool does not save student chats and students/teachers cannot return to the chat or generate links for citations.

Recommended

Flint

  • Age appropriate for Primary and Secondary
  • Teacher interface to build bots
  • States that Flint does not collect conversations for data training
  • Great entry level AI platform for teachers
  • Students not required to enter personal details to use
  • Flint generates outside links and students can evaluate content, use SIFT, and lateral reading strategies
  • Flint saves student chats and provides a link so students can return to the chat. The link can be used in student citations.

Recommended

CoPilot

  • Age limit of 13+
  • Collects conversations for data training
  • Students not required to enter personal details to use
  • Teacher interface to build bots
  • Generates relevant age outside links and students can evaluate content, use SIFT, and lateral reading strategies
  • Does not save student chats and does not provide a link for a citation
  • Students can generate a URL for their chat using ShareGPT
